CBD: A Patient's Guide to Medicinal Cannabis--Healing without the High

Rate this book
The essential book on CBD as medicine

This practical, accessible guide to using CBD-dominant cannabis contains a wealth of information for both first-time explorers and experienced patients who want to know more about safely treating a number of health conditions with remarkable results and low to no psychoactivity or negative side effects. CBD (cannabidiol) is a component of cannabis that can provide relief for conditions such as seizures, pain, inflammation, anxiety, depression, arthritis, and a number of other issues. This book offers guidance on various forms of the medicine such as oil infusions, alcohol-based tinctures, capsules, and CO2 concentrated extracts. The information is organized by health condition and also by recommended CBD-rich strains, which do not produce the "highs" associated with THC. With dosage suggestions, potential side effects and contraindications, and the pharmacology of the plant, this is an essential guide for both doctors and patients looking for a nontoxic alternative to opiate-based pain medications and other pharmaceuticals.

While cannabis has been used for medicinal and recreational purposes for thousands of years, only in the last fifty years have scientists begun to shed light on the chemistry of the plant and its interactions with the human body. Research has led to the discovery of a whole new system in the body, the endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in mediating functions such as appetite, immunity, mood, pain response, and memory. The authors present case studies, interviews with doctors who prescribe cannabidiol products, and the latest research regarding other active phytocannabinoids and terpenoids present in cannabis that are being studied for medical use. They also address the difference between CBD products derived from industrial hemp or in a lab, versus those made from medical marijuana using the whole plant.

In addition to offering the most up-to-date and comprehensive information on CBD-dominant cannabis therapy for humans, this book is the first to offer guidance for using the medicine for animals, with suggestions for dosage and delivery and useful forms and strains for common health issues in pets. Finally, the authors take a look at the future of cannabis medicine, charting trends in the legalization movement and suggesting how CBD might be used to fight the opioid epidemic.

About as in depth as you can get without a college course. Broken down in “makes sense” chapters, starting with “How Best To Use This Book” it’s a full course on the history of usage on up to its “Future Frontier” with enough information between to make you the most interesting person at your next night out with the gang.
Giving it’s chemical make-up and how that can vary by strain, along with cases of cures due to such, I’m thinking this should be sent to every legislative Say So in the country. Aside from the THC/CBD properties, there’s the simple fact that its hemp fibers are exemplary! It wasn’t always a taboo plant, in fact both George Washington Ann Thomas Jefferson we’re hemp farmers.
Thanks to Irish doctor, William Brooke O’Shaughnessy, who in 1839 probably conducted the first clinical trials, we have the first documentation of an infant being cured of seizures...within a mere few days!
But then, starting in the 1920’s William Randolph Hearst comes along and links the wonder plant to his prejudice of Mexicans and crusades to abolish its further use. Then Harry Jacob Anslinger (then Director of the FBN) adds African Americans and Chicanos to the bias, claiming smoking it made them “lust after white Women!!” Oh, the horrors! But nothing tops the anti-pot propaganda more hilariously than the now cult 1936 film “Reefer Madness” and its pseudo-psycho hype of effects.
On to “The Biology and Chemistry of Cannabis and CBD” with documentation of its effects on the human body, its organs, muscles, etc. with the active compounds interactions and effects. Fascinating how much good this one plant can do! I think when Jesus said “Heal yourself” he may have been pointing to a marijuana plant. Just saying...
Everything is broken down to easy reference chapters you can just flip to for answers to any question you may have. What’s the “Pharmacology of Phytocannabinoids”?? It’s in there! How does CBD act differently than THC? Terpenes? Indeed, with a list of a couple other plants that also carry some of the same terpenoids as cannabis and how they work/interact with you or other properties.
A chapter on how to partake includes the onset of effects, the duration and its bioavailability (smoking gives the most, unless you do, umm, rectal.) Then it goes into the various forms of such: tinctures, edibles, oils, juices, inhaling, and so on. Even a bit on synthetics. (As if!) Dosage guidelines are quite helpful with a nicely done chart to refer to. Of course the “Side Effects and Drug Interactions” is an important section, as well as very interesting, especially the “Bidirectional Effect.” The list of possible interactive drugs surprised me... antibiotics?
Part II is “CBD for Health Concerns” and extols the many benefits in an “alphabetized list” for easy look up. Each ailment has a “Dosage and Delivery” section followed by an “Effectiveness: Current Science” noting the studies.
A chapter on “Women’s Health Issues” gives more centered information as above, as does the following chapter on “Veterinary CBD” that includes the same sections on delivery methods and dosage.
Then we get into the varieties, including subspecies, and their own benefits and side effects. An “Alphabetized List of High-CBD Strains” gives the potency, makeup breakdown and even its aroma.
Finalizing with futuristic chapters on “Cannabis as a Tool to Fight the Opioid Epidemic” - “Political and Legal Trends” - “What’s Next-The Leading Edge of Cannabis-Based Medical Developments” to the Epilogue. Backed up with about a chapter worth of endnotes, it ends with a glossary of terms and abbreviations and index. Nice bios and contributor notes finish this compendium of everything you need to know about CBD. Well, except the nearest distributor.
Much, much more than a “patient’s guide” ... it’s damn near a course! If I could give more stars, I assuredly would.
THANK YOU GOODREADS & NORTH ATLANTIC BOOKS FOR THIS MOST AMAZING READ!

A great book to get you started in learning about CBD. Even though this book is focused on the CBD side of cannabis and hemp, it talks a lot about THC and all the other cannabinoids in cannabis because they can work better together. The holistic, whole-plant importance was very interesting to me. The book is laid out to explain the different methods of using CBD/cannabinoids (topical, vapor, edibles, etc) as well as what research is available/has been done (while also recognizing that it needs much more studying) on different health conditions that have been treated with CBD/cannabinoids. I was very interested in learning more about the CBD:THC ratio and there are plenty of cited resources for me to continue looking into. There is a section on the profiles of some popular strains including their cannabinoid and terpene breakdowns. Sections on CBD for pets, cannabis versus hemp CBD, the history of cannabis, our body's endocannabinoid system, and political and legal trends (just to name a few more topics) are all fascinating. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to start learning about CBD. I borrowed this book from my library, but I definitely plan on purchasing a copy for myself.

I am new to the CBD treatments. I have a lot of friends and family with issues that might be resolved or at least treated with these methods. The book isn't a cover to cover read. It is a resource for learning more about the different kinds of plants and doses. There are sections that are very specific for each kind of ailment and this is how I used it. I have since passed it on to friends who also have family members who are researching this old but new to us medicine. I will take it to my family's doctors to show them what this research is and to ask if they will approve of trials for my family members. There are drug interaction warnings so this is also good information to have. I would recommend it to people who are new to the medicine and are curious as to how to use it for their specific issue.

I won this on GoodReads.

As a nurse, patients and families as for my opinion on medical marijuana. “I have no clue” is not a very good answer. I found Leinow and Birbaum’s "CBD: A Patient’s Guide to Medical Cannabis", to be very helpful and informative. It also gives a starting point for further research. This book covers diseases that may be helped by marijuana, CBD to THC ratio (I didn’t know it made a difference), and a range of other useful information. This is a good source of basic information. Please note that the authors bias is definitely pro- medical cannabis, but the reference section is great for looking up studies.

Who knew __ not I __ that medicinal cannabis can assist in the treatment of so many conditions? Has so many varieties? Can be taken in so many ways?

In addition to covering all this, the handbook gives detailed dosage guidelines and guidance for use with animals.

This book was extremely helpful in understanding how to begin using medical CBD oil, something I have been interested in trying, to manage my Hashimoto's thyroditis, and chronic nerve pain. It was easy to understand, and very informative, for someone who has no prior experience using CBD oil. It has dosage charts, and great explanations of the charts.

Thank you to the publisher, whom I received the book from, through a Goodreads giveaway.

This is an excellent book who wants an introduction into cannabis. From history to properties, methods of consumption this book presents a thorough brief overview into the plant with excellent citations.

At times the science is presented in a way that's difficult to take apart and there is the occasional bit of new age spirituality that felt superfluous. But I still found the book fascinating and I would recommend it to someone wanting to learn more about this topic.

I agree with the message of this book, you always need to be careful with such solutions to make sure they are compatible with your body. The thing that works for most is using Best CBD products from Aifory. Their CBD oil is certified by government agencies to be free of any foreign bodies, which results in a potent relaxing effect.

I wanted to start reading this book because I discovered CBD a few months ago. I have always suffered from a form of mild anxiety that made me sleep little at night. So on the advice of my herbalist I tried Crystalweed CBD oil, and actually a few more hours now I sleep it. I was fascinated by this company's blog and I'm interested in learning more about CBD.

Yes, you are correct; they believe that only those with little means, no place to live, or those living on the streets do drugs. No, there are many kind of it. It is used in medications and similar products, so don't feel bad using it for this. I also use CBD oil on my joints because I've been experiencing joint pain for the past two years. and it is quite useful.

Decent overview of facts, and information for those who are just getting into CBD oil, and its medical uses. Worth having for reference even after read. It has dosing information in it that is, of course, individualized, but does give general guidelines. Something other books do not normally have.
